2022 - change job, start from near fresh grad level, 91k
all IT sector. now 2022 data engineer in china tech.
what do u guys think. quite sad yah. after 5-6 years but some fresh grads getting paid this much. hope it scales better from here on cause not going to switch industry/role much already

phd in tech is quite useless imo cause got a lot of average degree holders who just grind programming for a few years then hop to the US to earn 300-500k+. lots of indians also at FAANG and they not even from top unis

what was the point? people get PHD to become professors cause they love teaching...
could have gotten at least 120k / year in 2021, that was the peak of the hiring / crazy TC with tech giants everywhere throwing money everywhere.
anyway cheer up, very very few fresh grads getting as much as u anyway at least in this crappy market. no point comparing top 0.5% fresh grads to urself rofl you're not top 0.5% buddy, not when u get a PhD only to go back to a generalist role, seriously wtf
|
2016-2020 was not engineering payscale. was bored of data analyst so thought of trying out the phd as an option. at least after 2022 now moved into an actual engineering role. non tech degree.
yea its not the most optimal path compared to CS grads who have a 4 year headstart. bobian. take it as a mid career break lo, got a long way to go till retirement anyway

Yea I have to agree with the others, further studies beyond a Bachelors for CS / IT / tech does not make much sense unless you're looking for either deeply specialized roles ( AI / Machine Learning / Computer Vision, etc ) or to be a Professor.
That said, I don't see any problem with your end result. 91k is pretty good no? What fresh grads are getting 91k? The only guy I knew in my NTU batch getting that much was in ByteDance and uhh, he's FCH and he won those Shopee hackathon thing where they give you cash + a job interview.
The others that I know of are people in Shopee but didn't they have a mass layoff? Most of them got 84kish, 7k monthly, I've never heard of anyone getting 90k annual, at least not from my batch.

I think the PhD switcher is doing well objectively and seems to be improving over time. Everyone only compares against FAANG SWEs (who honestly, have an overrepresented voice cos they like talking about how much they make) but it is a stupid comparison
Lots of FAANG people brag about how little they work vs how much they make. In the long term, no one building a good team will want to hire them. In the short term, only large firms with flawed and game-able HR / hiring processes, and when markets are good, will bring them in in big numbers.
But they won't go far in the next 10 years because aegism is real and more and more young SWEs are coming in and they are even more competitive. Good luck to the useless people in this generation keeping their jobs in their late 30s/40s and they have already levered up on big condos.
How you spend and what happiness you get from what you spend is also as important.

The biggest problem with this forum is people like you who have absolutely 0 clue, talking out of their asses about things they don't know anything about.
FAANG = Google, Facebook, etc right?
Google let's you stay at L4 for a long time,
Source: s://.teamblind.com/post/Staying-at-Google-L4-forever-TNUxbDfw ( Fix the link yourself, anonymous users cannot post direct link, just google the headline )
Same for Amazon, Facebook and many other places. The reality is that once you get into FAANG, you just work hard abit then you can stay and be average for as long as you want. Other companies see "FAANG" on your resume, they will WANT you.
Do your research next time before you come talking cock with ********. You don't know what the fk you're talking about, stfu and don't ever post.
Garbage forum, FUD morons everywhere.

Lmao all industries think they are invincible before headwinds hit. You sound like yet another sucker born 3 years ago. In the past was O&G and IB. Now big tech's turn. The faster bubble was crypto, ran up and down really quickly.
Suckers like you always look using a short term rearview mirror to justify why your supernormal payscale should exist forever. 'Rest and Vest' only exists because last few years was a good capital environment for them to allow that. Once pressure on costs comes, it will go away. Can see you are very insecure and need to sip some kool aid to justify your superiority complex.
O&G salaries are still good but upside no longer insane. Same for investment banking. Same will be for tech - will still be good but no longer crazy in 5-10 years time. Weak people who were hired on the fringes at the end of a cycle will be gone. People who are passionate about coding and development will stay and be rewarded well.
Funniest was some new investment banking analysts before starting work seeing 2021 bonuses of like >12mths then think 2022 they will get the same. Forget that everyone is victim to capital markets. Now everyone is cutting bonuses and firing. Good luck.
Those who think they are entitled to perks, think they deserve this or that, will leave by themselves or get fired. Easy. See you surfing for job openings soon.
