Good coders can earn top notch salary. There are typically 2 careers tracks for engineer. Management or Individual contributor. Normally the manager is also ex engineers at tech companies. You can look at fb, google, apple, amazon and tesla VPs. Most of them are ex engineers or product managers. I have work on different companies with different level of IT skills. The more advanced the engineers in the organisation, you will see a lot more technical managers on those organisation and they also pay more.

In fact it is very common for engineers to get higher pay than project manager in tech companies.

Nope. As you can see those senior engineers who are often paid high salaries are often the first to be targeted during a reorganization or retrenchment exercise.

No progression, really.

Not true lol. It’s fine if you think working at singtel/uob/ocbc is better. I will never get jealous with your 7k salary.

Any CS grad going in now to chase the 5k salary is gonna be so dissapointed.

Supply increase outpace demand. Gonna be a cycle, look at last time civil engineering starting salary 5k also, now so sad.

Good engineers supply is increase, but it is not outpace the demand. Only fools who think that is the case. They dont look at data objectively and they dont understand how economy works.

If you like to invest, you should look at this data.

Tech companies currently employed 6% of total US population, but it comprises 35% of the total market cap in S&P500. Ideally 1% employment should map to 1% market cap, but tech is the anomaly. This is because it is the only business that can scale well and rapidly.

6% of the employment includes manual workers. If you exclude that (since they dont get pay that much), the number is more extreme.

1 employee contributes to more than 6x of what other industries can achieve. In US, many companies have realised that hence pay is not an issue. Even 9k salary for new grad is still cheap for them if you are that good. Tech is one highest profit margin industries and they keep investing a lot in RnD. Other industries? They dont even have luxury to invest in RnD. They will keep trimming the cost and lose with tech companies.

If you dont understand basic economics than that will be your conclusion. Tech has very good profit margin even if they pay higher salary. Supply for good engineers will always be a challenge for many companies. If it is so easy, why uob/ocbc/stanchart still comes up with crappy products.

Tech contributes to 40% of market cap in Snp500 and 6% of employment which means the output is 6x more than other industries. There are many things that can be automated with tech. Business model is also much more scalable than traditional business. I am making much more than my peers.
