If you are employed as a ‘consultant’, then it depends on your client, then it depends on the projects you work on. Same client, different projects will have different expectations.

Best job ever. Good career progression. Can be test lead. Can be test manager. Can actually crossover to toptier tech firms to plan test strategy there too. I have 15 years of experience in this field, though my testing days are long over, i am in charge of planning large scale test strategies now.
