I am in a dilemma. I am currently teaching in one of the polys and intend to apply to another poly. In the application, they have asked (to check/tick) if they can contact current employer.

What is the HR trying to get by asking us this question? If I tick, do not contact, will it be negative to my application? If I tick, who do they usually contact?

I don't want my current poly to know that i am applying to another poly.

No problem the HR will understand, if they are not even sensitive about this then it is not worth joining

speaking from experience (i do look after hiring in a poly). it is your personal preference to indicate yes/no to contact current employer. not much impact to your application.

note that the polys and ite have some sort of not to poach each others staff directly. however, there are still musical chairs despite the formal agreement
Having said this, each of the polys will try not to go overboard with the musical chair game.
eg sometimes like in past 6 months already stole x number of staff from another poly, then they will stop for a while etc.

Hi, I was referred to this thread by a forumer and I need your advice:
I am interested in ITE Lecturer job and below are my credentials:
1) Diploma Holder with work experience in Airforce for 6 years
2) Degree Holder (2 years full time in UK and is recognised by the Singapore Professional Engineers Board) with 1st Class Hons with work experience for ~14 years
Work Experience: Senior Technician (6 yrs), Electronic Design Engineer (10 yrs) and Engineering Manager (4 yrs).
What are the chances of me being recruited?
Which salary scale/range will I fall into? I believe AX? salary structure is used for ITE.
Thanks.

i was a poly lecturer. just like the poly, i think they will try to match your last drawn salary. for my case, they couldn't. so i got in with a very big pay cut.

on another related note, i think it's a matter of them picking you instead of the other way round. in other words, it's entirely possible that they may not even shortlist you for interview.

Thanks. Dont expect them to match my last drawn salary and I am mentally prepared to take a 10-15% paycut. I just wanted to have a rough idea on what salary they are willing to pay me if I am shortlisted. any chances to get >6K?

are you still in the RSAF?

likelihood, you will be in PAX4A. pay scale wise I think is from S$5500 to S$7500? could be higher but don't take my words as the gospel truth. it will all be revealed if you can make it to the HR interview.

I can't be sure as the pay-scale will get a revision once every few years. We've just had a revision and our pay were adjusted upwards, not alot but better than nothing.

from your qualification and experience, I believe you're more suited to be a course manager or a section head, i.e management role. however, if there is no such opening then your next best bet is a Senior Lecturer post, hence, the PAX4A ranking.

i can't answer you on your chances of being recruited, many factors to it. anyway, I wish you all the best.

As said above, likely you'll be in Pax 4A and Senior Lecturer. My feel is that your first drawn should be around $6K.

Very unlikely you'd be allowed to get into Course Manager appointment as a new hire though - too much at risk as you'd be unfamiliar with the many things involved in course curriculum, design and pedagogy, procedures, etc. Maybe a small possibility as a course-level Section Head but I also feel very unlikely. At best, maybe a function-level Section Head.

I left a banking job, 14 yrs experience to teach. took a 45% pay cut. I thought it was worth it in exchange with more time with my kids. Sadly this is not true. There are alot of other activities you need to be involve in on top of teaching, if you want to get good grading.
Also taking leave is not possible on teaching days hence if kids are sick your spouse must be able to take leave not yourself as you have classes on.
Think twice for those considering teaching. You must know the pros and cons. The best pros of teaching is the classroom time. Anything outside classroom time are really administrative.
