[QUOTE=Unregistered;11487]How about administrative staff in a polytechnic? Is PAX 4 also the highest grade that most admin staff will reach?[/QUOT
Grades are from PAX1 to PAX6. PAX1 and 2 are superscale and i think for directors and above and maybe includes DD. I think PAX3 is for ADs..and program chair....I was told that Snr Mgr is not even on PAX3 but PAX4 only. Note that salary ceiling for PAX4 is in the low 8Ks.......

Correct me if i am wrong but to go up to PAX3 and open up the ceiling, there are only a few appt you can move up to....

Comparatively, what happens to someone in the private sector in his 40s and hasn't moved into a management position? Wouldn't he be in the same shoes as the lecturer at PAX4?

true.. heard pax 4 ceiling is 8k+ only for managers.
pax 3 is about 12k+ ceiling.. on avg AD's and Course manager's are about 10k or so..
but the work in poly is not easy just so you know. juggling administrative work, course development, industry demand, students and parents is not for the faint hearted.

How much bonus on average? Can a good performer get 15-16 months a year? So course manager gets 160k?

PAX3 max Salary only 10.4K........where got ave 10K? anyone can confirm even snr manager is also PAX4 only? What happens to those snr lecturer that already hit the salary ceiling for PAX4 but cannot be promoted PAX3 because no openings fopr PAX appointments? No MI at all? not even a token sum? Btw, what are the appointments for PAX3, PAX2 and PAX1?
The private sector are more flexible. When hit ceiling, either there are exceptions or they will give you a token sum equals to the increment but base salary stays the same for the period of years you remains in that grade.
side track. Do you think if one is offered by poly, accepts the appointment and then for whatever reasons, decides to withdraw the acceptance, will the poly take legal actions, leave a black mark and/or forever will not extend another offer to the candidate in the future? What if is in the case of offered but did not accept, and few years later want to try again? What are the chances?

did a check, he is right pax 3 cap is indeed 12-13k.
i suspect you are refering to the bar value, not the ceiling.

an avg performer (C) gets 1.5 - 2 months for PB, while A graders get 4 - 5 months
but there are only 1 or 2 A-graders for pax scale.
i did calculation on what an a grader would get for 2010/2011
1 month for 13 month
1 month for year end variable
1.6 months for growth bonus
4-5 month for PB.
total 7.6 - 8.6 months...
still less than the 12 months keppel and some banks got this year...

From the 2008 joint review and i don't think they have review since then:
NEW GROSS SALARY RANGE FOR ACADEMIC AND SENIOR NON-ACADEMIC STAFF – POLYTECHNIC ACADEMIC EXECUTIVE (PAX) SCHEME
Grade Min ($) Bar / Max ($)
PAX 1 14,080 18,770 / 21,120
PAX 2 10,520 14,500/ 16,490
PAX 3 6,620 9,140/ 10,400
PAX 4A/ 4E 4,580 7,030/ 8,250
PAX 5A/ 5E 3,470 5,320/ 6,240
PAX 6A/ 6E 2,150 4,160/ 5,160
‘A’ and ‘E’ denotes Academic and Non-Academic Schemes respectively
So where did you get the 12-13K from?

Most people in banks don't get that much bonus. Only front office and sales people may get that much, but risk of getting fired due to various reasons (politics one of them) is very much higher compared to poly staff. Plus, they have pedigree qualifications, speak extremely well and look well too. So you cannot just simply imagine you have a choice of teaching in a poly or working as a hotshot banker / trader. Most likely you don't have a choice but to teach. From what I see, the PAX salaries are already pretty good. If it makes you feel better, I think there are teachers who feel poly lecturers are one up compared to MOE teachers (see a comment from one poster here).

this is the 2008 scheme. think the poster was refering to the inflation adjusted one to account for economic recovery (aka high inflation rates) in 2010.
here is the announcement. Civil service is usually faster than public service as public service has autonomy to enforce in their own time. so likely your poly is a bit slower.
Budget 2011 Higher pay for civil servants this year - Channel NewsAsia
anyway if it makes you feel better, inflation makes things more expensize so even if pax3 is 12k+.. he probably can only buy the same things he could buy with 10k+ in 2008..
