Bad times?
Is any job seeker feeling the wrath of covid 19 and slowing economies?
A lil background: 28 this year and am in the public sector. Started out as contract staff and was lucky to get converted to perm within a year because my predecessor left. I thought this was gonna be my career as i loved what I'm doing and the colleagues around are nice. However, 4 years in I started to feel quite sian about my job and especially so after learning that I'm quite far behind my peers who are in the private sector. In addition, it doesn't helps that I graduated from a private uni. So, I guess my career end point at here won't be very high and promotion might be slower? I've been applying for jobs in the private sector since Q3 last year. Mostly in the banking & fin sector since I major in this. I only managed to get called up for an contract role interview and wasn't chosen. Then came Q4, I can understand open roles are more limited as it's the holiday season and people are waiting for bonuses. Thought it will turn out better in Q1 but covid19 hits and it seems like an recession is coming. |
u should be very thankful.
the time will come when u are in your 40s to 50s and u see your friends getting retrenched 1 by 1 in the pte sector and they wish they were in your shoes. |
The problem here is your mindset. As an LSE Clementi grad, you're ungrateful about getting a perm job in public sector when a lot of your peers are struggling to be gainfully employed. Also the reason why you're getting rejected from the private sector isn't just because of your toilet paper degree, but also because your public sector experience is irrelevant. If you wanna hop over to the private sector, don't be choosy. The longer you stay in public service, the more unemployable you will be.

I have applied for many positions at public sector and couldn't even get an interview.

If you have a private degree, dun or TRY NOT to join the public sector. no matter how good or better you are than your cols from local unis or other overseas brand name unis, you wont go far. They will progress faster than you. Its a reality of fact in the public sector.
Given the situation now, better stay in your job first but continue to look out in the private sector. 28 is still not old. Job market always tend to be better come March as most people are getting their bonus but then again, im not sure for this year. |
