It's okay to get into tough starting, if he can get good long-term prospects. Can share what would his future career path? e.g. can make it to VP, SVP or whatever equivalent CxO ranks earning $300-500K+ p.a?

Thanks for all the useful info provided above. I have a friend who had a distance leaning degree and has gotten a job with the stated position. The salary isn't too bad IMO if he could get the high end offer at 2.9k. But having to burn so many sat makes the salary seems not as attractive. What can an individual in this position expect in term of career progression and increment. I think uob is quite generous with bonus?

People with aspirations to move up should not join any bank as an ops officer. It is a dead end OT job, you are never going to see your 500k pay by hanging around the lowest breed in a bank. There are all sorts of urban legend about some ops guy who makes it big, but when I was in SCB 2 years, I never see or hear of an actual ops officer who makes it big, these rumours are just dreams the bank sell to keep the lower grunts motivated.

agreed expecially now bank ops are trying to move most of their operation oversea that has cheaper labour even for the local banks.
Those that actually make it big and earn big money are the one that can make it in banking sales.

Continue thanking those who provided this thread with valuable input. Would it be a good choice to work in this position if an individual just wanted an average job and not the top tier earning kinda jobs. How's the increment like and average bonus for someone in this position?

IMO, if you are in ops, you have to bank-hop OR angkat bola until at least you are in middle office. It is a dead job yes, but it depends on what you want. If you want 300-500k p.a , its almost impossible in back office. If you are looking for big money, you can go for MA programmes, or other graduate immersion programmes. Getting an interview is another matter. These positions or even IB, look for elites from ivy league universities, with extensive knowledge and experience. So if you are just an average local/pte uni student. Stop dreaming. No offence.

The typical branch ops officer career in SCB:

1) Entry level (~2 years)
2) Senior (~2 years)
3) Lead / AM (4-7 years)
4) Dept Manager ( >3 years, most will ceiling at this level)
5) Branch Manager (only minority reach this level)

Above serve as guideline and will vary bank to bank, also take note the business title is different and tend to be very bombastic and inflated depending on business needs. Those fronting customer take on big titles like consultant, senior manager, vp etc., but pay can still be lower than an associate in HQ.

As for annual increment for average performer range from pay freeze (assuming you survive the chop) to 6% in good times. Average year for an average performing staff is 4-4.5%. Generally a deg graduate in branch ops can expect a pay of 5-5.3k after 10 years.

In short, my personal opinion is if you just want an average life with average career, don’t waste your time in banking ops, not worth the long hours and random abuse for the pathetic pay & bonus.
