6.2k not enough for two?

Quote:

I came to Singapore at age 25 earning 5K a month in 2005. The money was more than enough for a bachelor sharing a 5 room HDB apt with 2 other bachelor friends whom I knew from India. I always had enough to go out for parties at CQ, trips with friends, the odd date now and then(unfortunately few and far between) and yet save 2.5 k a month. Of course rent and cost of living were low.
Difference between my life in India and Singapore, were that I had more money to spend, but in India at 25% of the salary I could afford to get someone to cook for me, someone else to clean the house and do the laundry and a third person to wash my car once a week.

Fast forward to 2011, I make just under 6.2k. I'm married and my wife is unemployed. I am still renting an HDB, but the smallest possible configuration.

Taking a PR was the biggest mistake. Company reduced my salary by the amount they need to contribute. On top of that employee contribution from my salary.

Now I barely save 1K a month, that too by penny pinching to an extraordinary degree. Barely going out. Travel only by bus/MRT. No cabs for personal purposes. Eating out means at the food court. Only 1 trip a year and that too back home to visit our parents.

My college friends in India (in the IT industry) earn roughly around 3.5k to 4k in SGD terms. They live in posh apartments which they own(still have to pay the mortgage). Have servants, can afford to take vacations to places like Phuket, Bali, Egypt, Dubai and are basically enjoying life.
So my new year resolution is to leave Singapore by the middle of this year and try to get a job in India to chase the Indian dream. My singapore dream has turned sour in the last 3 years.

So the point was.... 5.5 K is not enough for an Indian family living an upper middle class life in India. 3K SGD will go a long way in India. Its only just above penury in singapore.

Both Singapore and India like opportunists like him - talented, savvy, intelligent, greedy, exploitative, never loyal, always on the lookout for new ways to make more money, never loyal, always feel taken advantage of but never the other way, never loyal, always comparing, always feel shortchanged, always feel the world owes him a living, never integrated, will never bat an eyelid quitting a country, never loyal.

We love him. Sg govt loves such savvy people. In comparison the sg citizens are so unsavvy.

In the current economic climate, he should buy his flat, not rent. Then he would be able to pay mortgage with his CPF instead of all from cash.

If he had bought a 3 or 4 room flat, even with his wife not working, I think he will find his salary adequate to afford trips to Phuket, Bali etc. If he so wanted, he can also hire a maid at $300 + maid levy.

So with better planning, I think he can live almost the same lifestyle as his friends back home.

Starting with 5k in 2005 and after staying for 5 years, he should have bought a flat considering he is a PR now. I guess he did not and almost no one foresaw the kind of price rise in Singapore.

In the current situation, 6.2k is clearly not a long term solution. However, many people with similar profiles either saved money, bought a house or migrated to Australia. If he cant do any of three, yes, in that case, India is a better option.

As a native Singaporean, I too want to hop on the India bandwagon! Even though I do not know Tamil, I am learning from my India Indian colleague now.

So much bitterness n frustration. Chill man. Immigration is a hard truth of singapore and i cant see the crowd pressure reducing in the next 3-5 years or so. Unless u guys start exporting useless frail Oldies and Loser Citizens to Aprika n Chaainaa. They are putting unnecessary burden on Singapore.

If you come here just to sell roti prata, we have no objections. But you are here to rob us of DECENT paying jobs and you are complaining that $6.2K is not enough.

You are too much! Please go back to India!!!

Shouldn't you learn hindi?

Unregistered 23-01-2011 11:02 AM

At least must have 15k per month, if not you will not be able to stay in a Condo but live your life among the locals in public housing.

India has so many dialects. Tamil is most useful.

does anyone have any idea how much a speech therapist get paid in singapore? I'm past 45 and considering a career switch to become a speech therapist. I have been an English teacher for more than 10 years in HK.

if you are new, maybe 3k? it's low because you have no prior experience (it's a career switch) and you will be competing with lots of new comers who, like it or not, are much younger than you. and i'm sure there will be foreign talent from the western countries competing with you for the same job as well. just like in HK, people here in singapore has a strange penchant for all things western. you may call them 鬼佬 but we call them foreign talent! (i simply assume you are chinese - sorry if i'm wrong.)

i believe you will also need at least some form of certification.

The official languages of India are Hindi and English.
Tamil is a regional dialect.

indian

similar situation is faced by me, unless you keep hopping jobs you dont get increment. with single earning things can be difficult. buying hdb would be excellent idea for you since you have pr. i cannot since i dont have pr. my sal is nearly 7k with commission but pr got rejected. you need nearly 100-150k for 3-4 room hdb and around 150-170k for exec hdb.
emi is going to come down to 900-1500 depending on what size you go for.

you must be paying rent of around 2000- 2200 $ so you will save on that.

also if you are falling short of cash. to arrange for 100-150 k
cpf can be utilized and also take some personal loan which banks are ready to lend upto 6 months salary for 5% interest which is still reasonable. the interest will only be around 1200-2000$ which is just one month rent.

..I know our friends back in india are having better life having cars and condos, and earning equivalent to us or more. but they are also subject to horrible traffic jams and frustration due to time lost on roads every day. we human beings are designed to be unhappy in any given situation.

we asked for this so lets face it.

Unregistered 23-04-2012 11:41 AM

Go back india and earn more plsss, dont steal my programming jobs or i may have to start writing comments in chinese lol

Unregistered 26-04-2012 01:34 PM

A few of my Indian friends (from India) confirm that living standards in India can indeed by higher than Singapore. The pay that they get here will allow them to hire a few maids, a chauffeur, buy a big house, send their kids to good schools --- basically live like a rich man in India.

Moreover, they don't have to work here to get this kind of pay. Back in India, there are many jobs that pay EQUIVALENT or even higher pay for the kind of skills they have (which is not much by our standards).

So the question begs: why are they still here competing with our young graduates for well paying jobs?

Unregistered 27-04-2012 04:30 PM

I heard of this too. I dont understand why are they here. Too competitive over there? or the market is too limited there?
