IT Security Job Prospects

Hi all,

I am currently a student specialising in IT security in a local poly. Just curious about how is the prospect so far? Because so far i have yet to see a thread for IT Sec so.. ya :)

oh yes, to add on, i'm currently holding a executive position in a student chapter affiliated to an IT security group locally. will this help me in future job interviews?

my current gpa is at 3+ :(

kinda worried about my future so thanks in advance to any pros who could guide me along ! :)

you see, you are worrying over unnecessary stuffs which is a complete waste of time.

if u do well, there's a high chance you can get a good job. There is always a need for IT security, do you have a confirmed rice bowl.

your affliliation looks good on your resume, it only helps when u state the actual kind of work that you actually do.

interviewers looks for people who can get the job done, not just fanciful titles on your resume. afterall, you stand a higher chance among yr graduating peers as well as experienced working people from the same field.

ok thanks for ur response
but well do employers treasure event management skills apart from the technical knowledge in security field that i possess in my academic curriculum?

oh i do have rhct (linux proficiency certification). by how much will this boost my salary or chances of being employed?

thanks in advance ! :)

short answer: no.

it depends on the nature of the job. if you are employed to secure a network, why do you need event management skills?

imo certifications are useless unless needed for the job.

perhaps you can aim for analyst or consultant role as your career in IT security. There are many employers looking for skilled labour aka cheap labour. since you are a poly grad, my advice is to get a good gpa to enter uni. or study for a degree part time. In sg if you have a degree your future will be more comfortable.

the truth is, you will be out of job by 30. Lots of FT around. They are cheaper ans faster.

yes programming life is really bad, and some more have to fight with FTs. IT auditor is a good choice too.... rhct may come in useful. but be warned: many of these positions prefer degree in computer science. poly grads mostly do support roles.

but if u're interested in govt service, they pay pretty well for poly grads.
