Its funny how Singaporeans think...
Its funny to see how Singaporeans think when it comes to discussing FTs and immigrants.
All I see is the never ending complaints on how FTs and immigrants are stealing our 'rice bowls'. Why are you even competing with those at the lower strata of the workforce? I.e. those who are getting paid S$1.8-4K
If SG is a first world country and its people are well educated, shouldn't you be competing for the top jobs in this 'knowledge based' industry? Shouldn't you be striving to pay your dues and work your way up that ladder and regain control of our businessess?
I have worked in a large sg corporate and MNCs and I am absolutely appalled by how we are controlled by FTs - especially angmohs, who are 'all talk only, no action'. Why no hatred against them? Why do we continue to welcome them with open arms, smile and act friendly when the truth is, many of them command salaries several times what you and your wife will earn.
And guess what? Are they smarter than you? No. Do they have more experience than you? No. Are they more hardworking than you? HELL NO. Why hire these angmohs as CEOs and not Uncle Lim, who has worked hard at the company for 20 years, holds an NTU MBA and knows the company and market more than anyone else in the company combined?
And you know what? These incompetent bastards at senior management (20%) make up 80% of most MNC/Large corporate's payroll. You should be after this portion of the pie. Why pick against the little indian chap who takes the MRT to work, earns a measly $1.5k a month and sends half of that back to his family? Or the malaysian auntie who came across from JB to clean your toilets for $900 a month and picks up used coca cola cans for extra side income?
And why the hell should you treat these angmoh's so well? Give them top jobs, best hospitality and best of everything. For those of you have have lived overseas before, do you know that we yellow/brown/black skinned people are treated as 2nd or 3rd class citizens at their home countries? We are not given opportunities for jobs let alone top jobs based on our qualifications and experience.
I am a Singaporean, not a scholar nor a receipient of any government scholarships, not educated at any of the local universities and I am ****ing sick of the double standard you guys are treating FTs
Time to wake the **** up.

Bcus singaporeans like all asians are obsessed with the west. And raised with an belief that they are entitled to better lives than Indians, Chinese, Philipinos, Banglas, etc. So, seeing a westerner doing well comes natural to them, but seeing another asian doing well or ok frustrates them. Life is not fair. A lot of incompetent people earn a lot and a lot of deserving ones dont. Its not just about FT, its also about the hierarchical mentality people are born with. Westerners are paid more for the same work.

I am Singaporean. I work alongside these highly paid expats and completely disagree with the TS. The ones I work with are really good and have worked in many countries and top companies before. There are a few Singaporeans who are their equal, but not many. Those who do typically have strong overseas degrees and some have worked their way up in top cities around the world. If you work in London and New York, in many of the most competitive industries, you will find that there are more foreigners than Englishmen or Americans. This is what makes those cities vibrant.
So, I wouldn't generalize your particular situation to the rest of Singapore. I believe that Singapore needs these people to be competitive.

it's called 崇洋媚外 which means: have a servile attitude to foreign things.
foreigners reading this, please continue to take advantage of this while you can.
the FT policy in Singapore was a huge concerted effort started many years back. remember all the foreign CEOs hired to run our biggest companies including DBS, OCBC, NOL, etc? (though DBS hinted an about turn recently when peter seah said the next ceo "should preferably be from within the bank, somebody home-grown within the bank.")
at one point even Temasek Holdings got an ang moh CEO elect. if FT are so good, i think parliament should one day also have a few ang mohs to teach us a thing or two about running a country.

Bro, the thing is that those people who hire FTs in the first place are all in the high management, these older generation of sgeans laid the foundation of what it is today. Its up to the new generation of high management sgeans to realise it and change, if they want to.

I agree with you. I work in a very large MNC here in Singapore and yes there are many FTs and Ang Mos. Most of them are really talented and have a good track record of performance and exposure thru working in other cities like London.
Not that they are all talk no action, sometimes I have to agree they tend to talk/conceptualise an idea with no concrete action. But thats the way the thinking process is for them, they like debates/discussions and not all will have actions. Singaporeans in general, wait for the boss to dictate and act.
I think you need a good balance, we should open up our minds, look at what these FTs offer and learn from them, and use it either to climb up the corporate ladder or for your own business. China is the best example, they learn from Singapore and is even doing better than us. Imagine if they are myopic to close their doors and think they can develop from scratch?

Peter Seah wasn't any good as a CEO when he ran OUB, but he has a big ego so he may be comparing himself to Piyush Gupta and saying to himself (although few would agree) that he would have been as good. Most people in the local banking circles would hold my opinion. Having said that, at least he knows "something" about banking compared to Koh Boon Hwee, who had an even bigger ego, but was completely ineffective as DBS' Chairman because he was the famous local boy who knew nothing about running a bank.
