You are naive to the point of being cute.

Do you really think anyone is going to offer you a lucrative 6 to 7 figure salary job by randomly sending CVs around? You dont sound like you even know have the slightest clue what bunker trading is.

Unregistered 12-01-2012 11:34 AM

I have saw their job posting on afew recruitment companies .

Knew my cousin was doing well (but didn't know the numbers could be so good). she's been in the line for 6-7 years now with 2 years spent in HK. She brought her brother inside as well last year. Both are poly grads but went to AU to further studies because can't get a spot in local uni.

She did tell me that the bonus was really high (>1 year) but she didn't tell me about the base pay. Going to encourage my brother to take this route as well since it looks like 1 of the better path out from Poly.

Total compensation seems lower than bankers still though.

It is a old boy network,
some comes from oil brokerage (not trading firm), or ship chartering
some joins from operations
some gets in becos his relatives work there
the newest kid in town is brightoil from china which is setup 2 yrs ago, many openings as veterans get poached leaving empty seats for young men and women....

not sure how mkt now

Unregistered 23-10-2012 01:54 PM

Haha, you must understand high salary and commission come with certain risk. For bunkering depend on which field you are in sometime you are required to board the ship climbing ladder in very bad wind condition. You don't have fixed work timing, when the ship come, sometime even you are watching a movie you need to go immediately. Of Cox some stuff u do to earn extra are not really legal as well.

Would help if for a start you wrote things in English and not like a school boy text message.

Seeking Genuine Advice

Hello.
Are you able to provide any tips on breaking into the oil trading industry? I have neither the contacts nor prior trading experience.

Thank you.

It's very difficult to get into this industry because people dun leave...most get in thru connections and when people leave a company in a industry, they go over to competitor so forever its very difficult to see vacancies...how many fresh grads enter oil trading compared to say banking or marketing?

Unregistered 22-01-2015 04:53 PM

just keep sending CVs and cross your fingers. that helped for me.

its a sunset industry. we are looking to get out and i dont know why theres still people trying to get in. there are better jobs out there that commands better pay. the norm now is at least a Degree in any major, gift of the gap, LOOK PRESENTABLE and street smart.

it may look glamorous, but take into account you have to standby ur work handphone in case of disputes. (even on holidays). be damn good at drinking and sociable. there are nights where u need to drink 3rd 4th rounds in a night.

do consider other jobs, its a sunset and sinking industry.

we "trade" via Yahoo Messengers. the main bulk of work comes during 1630 local time, this is where the market is "active". prices get passed to buyers. buyers will "counter" a lower price to the trader/broker, in turn, will relay the price back to the supply house(supplier)

so ding and dong, price settled. operations take over to ensure on time delivery of cargo. being said, that is the norm. there will be ****-hit-the-fan moments. you will learn it along the way . ;)
