It is a old boy network,
some comes from oil brokerage (not trading firm), or ship chartering
some joins from operations
some gets in becos his relatives work there
the newest kid in town is brightoil from china which is setup 2 yrs ago, many openings as veterans get poached leaving empty seats for young men and women....
not sure how mkt now

Haha, you must understand high salary and commission come with certain risk. For bunkering depend on which field you are in sometime you are required to board the ship climbing ladder in very bad wind condition. You don't have fixed work timing, when the ship come, sometime even you are watching a movie you need to go immediately. Of Cox some stuff u do to earn extra are not really legal as well.

Seeking Genuine Advice
Hello.
Are you able to provide any tips on breaking into the oil trading industry? I have neither the contacts nor prior trading experience.
Thank you.

It's very difficult to get into this industry because people dun leave...most get in thru connections and when people leave a company in a industry, they go over to competitor so forever its very difficult to see vacancies...how many fresh grads enter oil trading compared to say banking or marketing?

just keep sending CVs and cross your fingers. that helped for me.
its a sunset industry. we are looking to get out and i dont know why theres still people trying to get in. there are better jobs out there that commands better pay. the norm now is at least a Degree in any major, gift of the gap, LOOK PRESENTABLE and street smart.
it may look glamorous, but take into account you have to standby ur work handphone in case of disputes. (even on holidays). be damn good at drinking and sociable. there are nights where u need to drink 3rd 4th rounds in a night.
do consider other jobs, its a sunset and sinking industry.
