Yea, trade finance sales role for one of the bulge bank. Pay is good, but i asked around and seems to hear that its quite deadend and the job is mainly just doing brainless paperwork. My other offer is a buyside investment role in a small firm. Pay is lower, but job is much more interesting. Am in dilemma as to which path to take. Leaning towards the investment role but I am not sure whether the lower pay trade off is worth

Depends on which bank for trade financing. Would you be able to share? Some bulge have literally no presence in the trade financing business.

before you jump, here are my 2 cents.
when ppl think of tech - it rly is a spectrum. not say oh all tech roles and companies are the same and equivalent and the exp and skillsets surely transfer over. then u are in for a rude awakening.
that said, it depends on ur current skillsets, where u are passionate in and what u can realistically get into.
for eg. data analysts are a grey area where it can rly be a non tech role (using excel/dashboarding only) or can also be quite hardcore swe stuff. im sure u can see why, bc swe can surely be a data analyst but the reverse may not be true.
and then if you are looking at the real swe kind, then you die die have to mug leetcode as this is gna be one of the main grinds for tech recruiting.
and then compound all of this with the company u are looking at and it gets into even more of a grey area.

Hi poster here. Yes i agree with u that there's a huge range of skill for a "DA". I hope to be on the technical coding side rather than excel/dashboarding. Hence, Im considering going into SWE to build that good foundation before focusing on ML/Data pipeline. Thats also the reason why I asked if the swe role in the banks can provide me this foundation.

ah ok looks like you narrowed down your focus to data. i would advise you that ML/data has quite different fundamentals than swe.
for eg. your foundations in statistics/frameworks/libraries and past projects/prior work would be much more impt than whether you can invert a binary tree or whether you can explain the OSI model. like i said, it is rly a spectrum and may not be totally transferable.
unfortunately most AI/ML roles would require an advanced degree, but to ans your question, i would ask u to look out for data engineering roles be it in banks or else where as that is a compromise between swe and AI/ML and is within the data family.

I guess data engineering is an interesting intersection i havent considered before.. not sure if the salary for a data engineer is comparable to that of a swe in the same bank ( UOB, DBS, OCBC)

yes its comparable, like i said, tech roles in banks dont pay as much as tech firms pay tech roles.
so DE is quite equiv to SWE but thats in banks. the SWE in big tech like faang are top of the food chain. arguably more so than AI/ML in big tech.
