While I do like the nature of my job, I cannot fathom why must I sacrifice my potential earnings. If I was in other industry, I believe the future earnings will be more substantial. Hence if you feel that compensation is equally as important as the nature of the job, I would suggest you to skip healthcare. This is because the only way to increase pay is to farm your way up i.e. using time to clock experience, pray get promoted, to move up the pay scale.
Just my opinion, up to you to decide. Cheers.

Same thing happened to me when I tried to jump. Massive regrets to join healthcare. While money is not everything, seeing my non-healthcare peers enjoying the better things in life (decent job with competitive pay), makes me feel bitter towards my younger self for making the wrong choice.

Exactly.. I'm feeling bitter with HR and my stupid career mistake.
If you are okay with scrapping $5K in late 30s.. then please go ahead to join healthcare. All my friends were shocked to hear I earn so little for the amount of work we do. For the past 1 months plus, I have been OT-ing for at least an hour past my official working hours cos there is just too much work to do everyday.

If you want to get pay increment.. it's from public move to private then move back to public.
Progression is so slow.. promotion is limited by the number of people.. have to wait for seniors to move up before you can move up. I'm in a very small section of less than ten pax, I'm stuck in the same JG13 for ten years and there's no way to move up cos my section only needs one JG15, one JG 14. The rest of us will be stuck as 11, 12 and 13.

Curious about the typical pay increment if move from public to private. Is it 15-20% bump in TC as what most other industries offer if you jump? Can anyone share your experience or if you happen to know from your colleagues?

Lol don't think it will be 15 to 20%. Healthcare is not like other industries. Private also have their own issues. My department all jump from private to public cos the private environment is too toxic.

There is a reason why healthcare have lots of scholarship programme and recruitment advertisement online and at public transportation. Do you see lots of recruitment ad for industries that provide competitive compensation

Thhats my case, getting $5.2K at age 39.
Actually, right now, my focus is jumping out but I have no transferrable skills (I am doing admin at Singhealth); I also don't know what jobs I can do!

Wonder if there are any success stories of AHP or admin switching to a completely different industry.
I knew of someone who was a nurse. She switched to admin in a financial sector in her 30s, but had to start right from the bottom...fresh grad pay. 10 years of actual work gone down the drain.
Probably very similar to education and social sector...all industries view these sectors as no transferable skills

Late 20s ex-AHP here, jumped to finance industry as business analyst. It was tough as had to learn a lot of new technical skills before I manage to land the role. Also took a slight pay cut but quickly caught up within 2 yrs. Now drawing 20-25% higher for TC compared to if I would have stayed. And better future prospect and can wfh
