Hi, I graduated from NUS Computing with 3rd Class Honour. I'm earning way above market the rate now. I am like you last time and I thought my future is doom. But life is full of opportunities. My advice is to strike the interview creatively. Don't use words that a normal interviewee used. And most importantly, please do research and homework before attending the interview. Interviewers like to seek your opinion about their companies. Hope it helps! If all else fail, still can sign on. If all smooth, 10 years down the road in service will make you live very comfortably...

Care to share what is your current package? Which year did you graduate from? I am from NTU mechanical engineering with GPA very close to 3.0. I am not way above the market rate but decent for normal degree holder.

I have seen second lower honours graduates doing well in public sector and GLC. Third class and below surely has more shut door but if you are willing to learn and passionate, I believe interviewer will be able to see.

Now that both NUS & NTU are using honours (merit) in place of 2nd lower honours

Would like to know (esp from HR & recruiters) if this change has been helpful for honours (merit) applicants

How about in the government/civil service?

Has things become more favourable for honours (merit) students?

Not HR, just sharing my personal data collection

Like you said, 'use in place' employers also know that there is a way to quantify. The easiest way is to look for the number of A and Bs. It's not difficult at all. NTU used to host private recruitment drive for certain companies and got slammed, however it takes two hands to clap.

these days there are other weighting such as psychometric test, personality profiling, and performance interview. These tests are mostly done by American firms that have the resources and understand that a bad hire is a huge waste of resources.

Some companies have very high turnover and no lack of candidates to take the bottom jobs, so they just welcome many candidates and let attrition take care of finding the best person. fairer than some strange test I feel.

Finding job like finding spouse, needs some element of fate. Positive thinking and attitude goes a long way.

i think if u are 2:2, you wouldnt need "much" help to find a job anyway, especially if you are from STEM field. just dont set expectations that are clearly too high, those borderline cases can just apply and try your best. This is especially so for 2:2 and have mediocre or almost zero internships.

But whether the name change helped within Singapore itself for job search? I dont think so, maybe for overseas job application may have some positive change.

Is it true that we will be able to redeem ourselves later on?
Meaning as everyone says, after a few years of work exp, employers and recruiters value the work exp more than the not-so-good grades

It's very possible for a 2:2 to secure a great offer before graduation.

Nowadays there are a number of holistic tests to determine your overall quality, which will be helpful for lower scorers.

But a number of companies state that 2:1 at least if not, need not apply
Just try anyway? What do you all think?
I think that it’s always good to give things a try, no harm
