Questions

Hi everyone. I am still a student atm, in a local polytechnic. Well, the course that i'm studying now is also known as DMD or Digital Media Design. And recently, i've read on several forum that Designers, are not very feasible in Singapore. And the only reason that i'm in this course is because i failed my maths during my O'levels examinations. I'm very interested in the IT field, especially in IT Security. However, the biggest obstacle now is i failed my maths and a lot of path is shut off from me. Is it possible for me to venture into the IT route? Any advises from experienced adults on this forums? I realise i have to start thinking about all these seriously...

There aren't many jobs that specifically deal mainly in IT security, probably even less than design related jobs. I suggest you go for the designer route. You can also ask your lecturers for advice. I think they should quite a fair bit about the design industry in Singapore.

Actually, banks and financial institutions usually have a huge team dedicated to it security. Others such as kpmg, pwc have advisory depts on it security and system as well. These are well paying jobs.

However, ask urself what's ur competitive advantages? U will have to compete with pple from local uni and private uni with good results to get an entry level job. Do u think u are up for it? If not, you will need to settle for a lower pay. If so, are u okay with it? If u are not okay with low pay and high competition, stick with ur current career path, unless u have 0 int.

Anyway, a cruel reality-- sometimes even if u settle for a much lower pay, employers might still not want to employ u. So give some careful thought before u make the change.

go for professional certificates like CISSP. ask on hardwarezone forums (Certified Systems, IT Security and Network Training sub forum)... lots of people there with experience.

do internships, part-time, temp, contract jobs to gain experience. imo, no point continuing with design if you have no interest.
