Hi im an nsf who is thinking about studying overseas.

I am thinking of applying to:

Local: NUS Accountancy

UK: Economics at LSE, UCL,(LSE & UCL unlikely to get in) Warwick, Manchester & Bath

Canada: Economics at University of Toronto

Considering my grades (4H2 AAAC/AA, Chinese B), I would most likely stand a chance in entering most (excluding LSE & UCL D: ) of the above mentioned unis.

Assuming that I will be returning to Singapore after graduation for work, which degree would make me more employable? (I understand that its difficult for foreigne students to find jobs in the UK after graduation)

Also im aware that singaporeans generally aren't that well informed about UK unis outside the usual Oxbridge etc....what would be some of the Tier 2 UK schools (Manchester, Bath, Bristol, Nottingham, Durham etc) that are more well known/ recognized among singaporean employers?

Or, considering my choices of universities; should I even bother going overseas? My family is able to afford an overseas education.


*I hope to work in the finance sector, not necessarily high flyer IB stuff.

why never consider NTU Accountancy. its a 3-year direct honours, NUS is 4-year. You enter workforce 1 year earlier, though some say 1 year is short but you do gain useful experience.

Oo many reasons....some might not be completely rational

1) My whole family went to NUS

2) I plan to double major in something else too...so I'm afraid tht NTU's 3 yr prog would be too packed.

3) I think NUS has better international branding.

4) I hate the way NTU's campus looks :/

Business school wise, NTU > NUS.

dunno about now but back in 2006, friend gt rejected by NTU Biz but gt into NUS Biz.

Are employers going to be biased against NUS, in favour of NTU?

What about the other overseas unis?

Is it wise to opt for an accounting degree, against a general BBA, in light of the hordes of BBA holders in the country? It dosent look like the craze over BBAs is going to subside anytime soon.

OR would an econs degree by more advantageous, even though local econs grads dont seem to get much respect? Econs courses certainly arent as hyped up locally, when compared to other countries such as the UK.

Also, is the overseas branding and experience going to make me more employable?

Hopefully some one with experience in the working world can enlighten me

be realistic, most non-singaporeans (which very likely include your future employers) will have no clue that ntu's business school is better in certain rankings.

if you want to get PR in another country, canada would be your best shot.
in terms of reputation in singapore, I'll say LSE and UCL.
actually, I think you have a good shot at UCL. don't write it off so quickly.
I'll say don't bother with local universities since you can afford overseas.
imo, warwick/manchester/bath are better choices than NUS. don't even bother with NTU. crappy place especially for undergrad.

No. 1 and 4 definitely not rational lah.

NUS and NTU wont differ much at all (in fact not at all) in local context, even more so for BBA. but for postgrad, Nanyang MBA has better international reputation and ranking. but well, why spend another year attaining the same thing - this is actually the prime reason why NTU actually seems 'better', doesnt mean that NTU teaches better than NUS, in fact most BBAs curriculum are more or less the same.

Amongst your overseas choices, of cos LSE and UCL better. If not, the next choice will be Manchester. but UK is very academic-based, you should go for something that gives you balance of theory and practice (my own opinion). US is a good choice, have you considered US? why UK is popular among sporeans is cos its 3-year direct honours and cheaper.

What have been 'popular', 'recognised', 'preferred' etc is based on what people have done in the past and it gets passed down. But things are changing slowly this generation, some things will remain, but I foresee alot of things will change in 10 to 20 years.

ntu has a double degree in acc and biz that you can complete in as fast as 3.5 yrs.

is overseas exp going to make you more employable?
if you can prove that you are able to bring in different perspective.
if not, some will see you as just another rich kid.

once you are into your 3rd year of wk, your wk performance (hw well you hv performed so far) will triumph above everything, unless you are in public sector.
