This is a stupid question..... All employers prefer first class honors.... Duh... No wonder you cannot do well academically...

Employers prefer 1st class honor, but it doesn't mean that only those 1st class honor chap will get the job offer.

A good honor will boost your competitiveness in getting a chance for interview. That's all. Once you get invited for an interview, your result does not matter much any more. Ppl will look more on how you perform in the interview.

Yah.. But my point is that we at HR receive so many resume appying for 1 single position.. Where got time to read thru every single resume?? We'll just filter out all the 1st class honors and then shred the rest..
Those resumes with only one side printed on... we can even turn over to use the other side as rough paper or to put under our coffee cups at our desk... No matter how good you think you can perform for an interview.. You won't even get a chance to step in thru the door for an interview... Singapore is very pragmatic when it comes to academic performance.. No point ********ting that despite you get lousy grades in university but you are in fact super hardworking like contruction site Banglahs and super intelligent like Enstein.. Save the crap please...

Well, if you are applying for companies which only take in 1st class honor while you're not having a gd honor, too bad you'll have 0 chance breaking in.

However, not all companies filter out the applicants they want just by looking at their academic performance. There are still plenty of chances for ppl with outstanding curriculum performance. Exxon takes in the 2nd-lower/3rd class too

Default Pissed off

I'm really pissed off with the criteria looking for "second upper & above" for any job interview, or scholarship interview. It does not make any sense especially when different courses have different difficulities, and a clear cut "second upper" would distinguish second lowers or high second lowers (who probably did not do well in academics) with someone who just make the 2nd upper CAP cutoff based on pure academics (which is not very accurate itself).

Much attention has been done to grading of PSLE, Olevels etc, but none has been done to this unfair university grading system, which in the end divides people through this absurd classification system. Look at the modules which a 2nd upper took. Does taking easy but irrelavant electives and scoring A in them, make them a better field expert than someone who did not but score better in their relavant modules? Although i must say that the university grading and exam system is not very fair by itself. Not being sour grapes, just speaking up for friends.

Thumbs down looking based on CAP means that your maths fail

Of course. It is not mathematically correct to choose someone based on bell curve, let alone CAP.

For eg, some people score B+ B+ B(the most important and relavant core) BA(some random elective), would secure a second uppers with 4.0,

but someone else who scored A-(most relavant core to job/scholarship) B+ B+ B B(some random elective) who been deemed a 2nd lower (3.9).

This is just an example with 5mods to illustrate the unfairness of how B and A- (2 grades difference, mind you!) in the most relavant (and perhaps challenging) core can make a difference in the interview process. And of course, examinations are not the most accurate assessment tool, but what's more about the A in some random elective assessment?

I hope employers and the universities are not so dumb to look at the class of honours by itself.

hey HR, u r supposed to be looking for experienced candidates. there's something really wrong if all employers are looking for fresh grads.

if no good gpa, make it up by doing an internship somewhere, or have a portfolio. dun expect companies see ur modules' grade and call u say good morning can u come for interview. like that everyone who go uni no need to study already, just score a few modules and say i'm jin satki, can fill ur pockets with more cash with my grades.

pls hor, u have poor grades, make it up in your cover letter. that's ur only and last chance.

sorry hor, the honours is a pay scale on how much u r worth. if you really jin satki got the job, the hr will say 'sorry for the low pay, but this is what we pay all 3rd grass horners. u not 1st grass horners so cannot give more'.

if you really got 1st grass horners, the hr will say 'sorry hor, all fresh grads we give this pay. take it or leave it.'.

Default 2nd upper?!

2nd upper also not first crass............ They should let 2nd upper and lower fight with each other based on other activities they did. Don't understand why just some "academics" difference yet the options are so different. I respect first class honours students but not 2nd upper ppl with the "elite uncaring" attitude towards 2nd lower/3rd class. You are not much better if your attitude sucks and don't do much other things other than studies.
