NTU (non-faculty)

Yeah, non-faculty staff. As Mgr, Snr Mgr, AD, SAD onwards.. How is the work culture like at NTU, specifically in the admin offices (OT)? I heard there are quite a handful of former colonels there? Military style?

I understand that it is no longer a stat board, this means that it no longer enjoy the government annual bonus declaration on top of the usual AWS & PB. True?

From the forum, it seems like the average PB is about 2mths for those in government or stat board. So far how is the PB at NTU?

Promotion prospect/rate?

Kum Sia very much!

NTU is very big, so work culture depends on which department you are in, and whether you are with the Schools (faculties), or with central administration. I would say it is a bureaucratic place. Not a related point, but there are many ex-civil servants servants in the administration.

NTU pays PB and a 13th month bonus. It doesn't pay the variable bonus declared by the govt in June and December. The PB in NTU varies year to year, depending on the state of the economy, it seems. The average performer gets less than 2 months last year, closer to 1 month for the more junior staff. Civil service seems to pay better bonuses. This year's PB has not been paid.

Is there a way to broaden this thread to include all the local universities?

miwashi 06-07-2011 09:12 AM

When I was working at nus last time, there wasn't a 13th month bonus. Only PB.

Thanks for the info. The PB is quite so so compared to civil & public service. Avg performer is about 2-2.5mths which is quite standard. So it seems like there is no 'adjustment' in view of it goin autonomous and away from gov bonus.

Any idea on the annual increment? 4-5%?

Understand from somewhere that the salary scale there is different from Goverment MX scheme. I heard some sort of E1 to E4, M1 to M4? E1 is for diploma holder?

But apparently they have similar MSO scheme like gov sector.

You are working in admin? MSO scheme or executive scheme? I heard from friend there is 13th mth for mgrs. How is the PB?

Unregistered 06-07-2011 01:04 PM

There was a pay adjustment some years back when the university moved away from the civil service scheme and government declared bonuses. The annual increment is also so-so, definitely less than 4% for average performer. I think E1 to E3 is for diploma holders, but I'm not sure.

miwashi 06-07-2011 01:36 PM

as far as I know they only have 2 schemes - admin staff and academic staff. My colleagues were the same as me, no 13th month bonus. Our manager was also classed as admin staff, the manager title was a sort of local rank in the office.

Looking at their directory, they have Executive, Higher Executive, Asst Mgr, Mgr, Snr Mgr, AD, SAD, DD, D

Not sure how it is mapped to the E1-E4 & M1-M4 scale. Looking at the recruitment, Executive seems to be entry for Dip holders.

Unregistered 06-07-2011 05:50 PM

Fresh graduates start off as Asst Manager, and placed, I think, on E4.

Could be a grey area, looking at this ad:
Executive Officer/Higher Executive Officer (HR) job - NTU – School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Dip holder will be Executive, Degree Holder will be Higher Executive

Any more contribution?

Unregistered 12-07-2011 08:55 PM

Anyone have an idea of when does NTU sends out notification of PB or when is it given?

Unregistered 13-07-2011 04:40 PM

Sometime in July I think.

How about SMU and NUS? Anyone knows?

Unregistered 13-07-2011 11:58 PM

Just found out from my colleague.

Research Staff = Will get PB notification on 12th July
Management & Support Staff = Will get PB end of July.

Thanks for Sharing! I supposed you are working there? Can shed some light on the Management & Senior Officers salary scale E1 to E4, M1 to M4?? Also, how is the work environment?

Unregistered 14-07-2011 12:15 PM

The E Band goes up to E6. There are also grades above M4. Unlike the civil service, the salary scales are not transparent though.

undiscern 14-07-2011 03:47 PM

Really? I know that grade higher than m4 is most probably senior leaders such as provost, vp, chief etc. what job title does grade E6 map to?

undiscern 25-07-2011 06:54 PM

A new president has been installed. Any words going about in the campus on possible radical changes?

Unregistered 28-07-2011 06:07 PM

E6 maps to Manager. As for work culture, depends on where you are planning to join.

undiscern 29-07-2011 12:09 AM

I see, I though E6 would map to Senior Manager and the M1 & above scale would map to AD, SAD, DD & D etc.

Lots of other leadership changes in tandem with the installation of new President.

E6 maps to Manager. Senior Manager and AD are the same in terms of grade. Don't ask me why they have so many different titles.

NTU work culture

How is the merit increment like in NTU? same like ministries & stats board (polytechnics)?

Unregistered 16-10-2012 09:25 PM

Anybody working in NTU as Assistant Manager (Administrative/ Professional Appointments for University Degree Holders)?

How're the salary, benefits, working environment and career progression like there?
Also, how's the workload like? Are there frequent OTs and working during wkends?

I know these mostly depend on the departments, but just asking for a general guide. :)

Thanks in advance!

Anybody working in Ntu? i was offered a temp job with prospect to convert to perm. They would not let me know how long it would take to get me the conversion and wouldn't let me know will there be any increment after i was converted to perm. Anybody working in NTU have any insights on salary increment after probation or perm conversion?

never take on a contract job with no stated timeline to convert to perm unless the pay is min 30% higher.

About 1 month for average performers.

Unregistered 25-10-2014 10:55 AM

NTU's corporate side has made a horrible impression on me as an employer.

I applied for a position and very quickly received an email to set up an interview.

First red flag came up early - they set me up for interview date and time without 'asking' about my availability first. I know usually this asking is just a formality but I don't think it bodes well when a potential employer just confirms those details without checking first.

So I travelled to NTU, which is almost like going to Malaysia for people who don't live in Jurong. Then at the interview I was made to do a written test that lasted one hour BEFORE being told casually as if it's the most natural thing in the world, during the interview, that the position I applied for was already filled and they're actually looking for someone to fill another different position, albeit in the same overall department. Nothing wrong with that but at least have the decency to call me and ask if I'm interested in the different position right? Saves everyone the trouble.

And this different position is something I have absolutely zero interest in. Well I was pissed but I soldiered on, trying to be polite and they dragged the interview out for ages, even getting the head of dept to come in halfway, and that person started asking the exact same questions I was asked earlier by HR and the other interviewer. What a waste of time and I even took leave to go down for that sham of an interview.

Not an employer I'd wanna work for.
