I can see the media side being overly obsessed with facade and appearances work-wise :/

Yup, both.
For the first point, boss will tell you, I don’t know what I want, but I know I don’t want this. And will start asking WTF questions that makes you think if they have any subject knowledge. The boss would probably say things like, explain to me like I’m a layman, and then say, your presentation lack technical info. When you put in more info, the feedback is your presentation is not concise and does not get to point directly.
As for the second, bosses LOVE infographics. It has to be something new that they seen. It can be a fanciful piechart with overload info, but they only see it as one single image, that’s concise for them

What was more troubling was that the reason for doing the task is sometimes not even clear, and asking why is frowned upon. The director will look at you like how dare you question why CE wants. And when you ask the director to explain what CE wants, they'll ask you to "do your job" and figure it out. Still dun know what the directors are busy doing since they don't seem that interested in clarifying direction. Appeasing CE maybe.
Sometimes, what CE asked for is unclear or pointless, but those under CE will try to gaslight staff to think that the work is so important it can change the world. If you don't feel passionate about it, you must be unmotivated or afraid of challenges.

I was ever cc-ed in an email thread with him and his staff. The way he talks to his staff is really inhumane, deliberately use a lot of hurtful words. No wonder his team has such high turnover.

You must be pretty high up in your position to even rub shoulders with the director.
If director refused to help, is it taboo to email straight to the CE for clarification, and cc your string of bosses?

You can ask for a whiteboarding session with CE.
People in earlier posts have tried this. Thank you for posting about your experience.

CE has his own agenda, and the Dir have their own agendas, and most if not all the time, everyone know nuts about digital or technology, and they ask questions that do not make sense. Disagreeing and trying to explain is as good as holding a wet thread up. The rule of thumb is always your reply has to please everyone in the meeting, so that the management is happy and feel good and feel like that have done their job. As for lower ranks, you just have suck it up and go back to the drawing board. Some times, you just find yourselves going a whole big round of 20x changes and ended up with the idea as presented first time round.

The IMDA management are so damn incompetent, they know nuts about tech. Their knowledge of Gen AI is limited to ChatGPT and Midjourney but they think they are Andrew Ng.
