Default Long march.

Hi,

I am in the Tier-1 IT firm. In my immediate team, there are several Masters (e.g.: MBA) holders. Without going into too much details, I will suggest you consider doing your Doctorate (be it PhD or DBA) if it fits into your overall scheme/plan.

Do bear in mind (try to read/search the average pay) of Prof (Academia) in your desired field. From my limited research, the local (SG) salary for the Adjunct ("Temp"/Relief) Prof (Note: 'entry level') is barely S$100K. [Do note and find the assumptions commonly associated]. If you are in IT long enough, you ought to know how 'attractive' S$100K is valued. [As for moving ahead and being 'Dean', generally from the 'comments' published, yes you can, provided your sterling qualifications + experience + publications (Tier 1 journals etc etc).] In short => Be realistic (The general perception is ~S$160K, or the equivalent of a typical GM pay in a sizable firm).

The focus in academia field is towards 'commercialisation'. Thus, if you are well connected in the field/industry and can serve as bridge/link the Uni/Poly to the commercial 'projects'/consultancy service to bring in revenue/exposure/student placement, then yes, you stand a good chance. [Especially, if you know so-and-so, and can serve to meet the organisation needs and offerings/alignment. Tangible benefits. Measureble.]

In summary, what I had written above was from my "mini research". Similar to yourself, I am in the IT field, but I am completing my Doctorate. Hopefully. *sigh*.......long and lonely journey. On a personal note: Do check with your family before committing on the PhD/DBA/MBA program. Their buy-in/support is VERY important. Missing many family outings/key events. Shall not scare you.

Rgds,
Lone Ranger.
