To be more specific, your household income is at the average graduate couple family income level.

Describing ourselves as average, or typical middle class is very common, in many countries. Many people see themselves as middle class, whether they are poor or rich. That is also not too wrong as the middle income band is very wide, which may be further divided into lower middle, middle and upper middle income.

Some sociologists tried to explain this phenomenon of people labeling themselves as middle class to the fact that people tend to stay and socialize with people of their income status. They thus see that they are no different from the others so they see themselves as the typical family. This is why the working class and upper class people also see themselves as middle class.

One other outcome of this effect is that the poor tended to under-estimate the income of the rich, while the rich tended to over-estimate the income of the poor. While sociologists do not think there is any problem for the poor to under-estimate the income of the rich, they are troubled by the rich over-estimating the income of the poor. This means that the rich do not think and feel they need to help the poor in society. They might see the poor as middle class thus not requiring of assistance.

In Singapore, I guess this phenomenon is less pronounced because we are a small city, and people here are more mobile. The poor guy living in a small rented HDB can see for himself the many landed properties and condos around him. The problem is the rich guy may not be aware of the poor guy living in a small rented HDB.
