As an employer employing both foreigners and singaporean, I think some Singaporeans need a kick up their teeth to wake up. Competition is getting more and more stiff but some Singaporeans only think about themselves trying to short change the company by asking for the sky yet deliver very little, have no motivation to strive to do more and always think they are entitled to more despite contributing very little and complain alot. On the other hand, i dare say vast majority of my malaysian employees are hardworking, don't complain as much and is ready to work extra hours even during weekend. That's why I am inclined to pay them more and promote them faster. They are also more innovative, don't tell me 10001 reason why something cannot be done and give solutions around it. Ultimately our goals are similar i.e. make the company profitable, grow the company defend it against competitor and share the profits.

Remember, companies pay for value. They don't pay you to maintain your living cost. That's on you to manage yourself. Salary offered and cost of living is mutually exclusive. I think having too much protectionist policies will only hamper businesses and destroy the country.
