You shld get to know some of the eye residents during residency open house and ask them directly.
I’m not in eye, but we all know it’s highly competitive. So you prolly need to do research and get to know the relevant faculty members.

Good work ethic and recommendations count for something. But your CV helps to get your name filtered out among the endless list of residency applicants.
