Thinking back I would still prefer to do consulting then maintenance.
I probably wouldn't change that if I had a chance. Consulting builds a good base on M&E fundamental knowledge esp if you work on big projects and various sector.

Doing maintenance/FM first you will never be able to gain that amount of knowledge. Furthermore, I do not think that it will be easy to switch from FM to consultancy. Perhaps it will not even be easy to get a job as you do not have any design knowledge.
