I agree in principle to everything you've said.
It seems to me, however, that the affected individual may not have the means (or appetite) to wait it out. Waiting for a better opportunity comes at the cost of being jobless for the next 2-3 months at least (bonus in December, one month notice will be Jan). It's one of those rock and a hard place situations and really depends on how long you can survive without a job.
