Default Getting exposure for other area of interest

Hi

Wish to get some career advice in this matter.

Background: If you are already in the company for a long time and wish to get exposure to certain technologies. However, there is no chance to do as assignment of work is done from the higher management.

What are the avenue can I demonstrate/learn and participate in the area of work that I want? (I have already enroll myself in some external courses to beef out my knowledge).

Thanks.

Lim kopi and rub shoulders with your higher management...duh?

Why are you all always chasing the paper dream and praying the paper will grant you your wish

Not really. I don't believe in paper chasing as real knowledge comes with real hands on experience, but finding one way in the dark is definitely takes a longer time without any course learning.

I did my own study and hands on after my full day at work. I took up courses which is more hands and practical, it is more like a way to level up my skill and knowledge but definitely not a replacement to real hand experience to work. Thus i hope to have a chance to make into my area of interest.

The guest identified the problem my friend.

To elaborate, I meant you are chasing after the qualifications and hands on experience thinking that it will grant you your wish. Looking at how long you have been in the company already, chances are this route wont work for you. I know it sounds logical you should have the opportunity given the paper and hands on experience but in reality there are many more reasons why some people get the job and some don't.

For example, we have an internal position that is currently open. On the front we have ads and agencies looking for that position but if I were to refer someone to my HOD I am 100% sure that person is going to be guaranteed an interview and probably a +40% of getting hired for the role.

Knowing someone and making that person likes you, trust you goes a VERY VERY long way in climbing the corporate ladder and getting things done. These are life skills that companies look for, especially in management positions where you need to be able to influence people and departments to work together.

Which is what I meant by getting to know your management and the key stakeholders. This to me is the active way to showcase your abilities and likeability rather than chasing the paper and hoping someone will notice.

Hope this helps!

To add on, in most fields simply studying for some course without having real experience to put on CV is a waste of time. Employers are not interested in someone blabbering in an interview how 'hands on' his course is when he has never actually done the work in real life.

When you are doing X and then at the same time studying X+, it will be very easy to demonstrate knowledge in X industry, cite a few key referees in X and then explain why X+ course is useful to X. In such cases, studying is the booster pack to increase momentum.

There is no value in a job seeker doing X and then studying Y and then claim the Y course is very hands on so please give me a Y job. The only way this is going to work is in industries where there is a severe shortage of manpower due to low pay and/or undesirable work environment like hospitality, f&b, nursing etc.
