As per title. And how did you react?

Say, a superior or boss who criticizes you publicly in front of your other colleagues everyday over things both personal and work-related, to the point that your colleagues start feeling pitiful for you and you become totally powerless in the company due to that, and your image also goes down.

I wonder if this is part of the Singaporean work culture for superiors to publicly scold / humiliate / berate subordinates.

Happens all the time in SMEs, consultancies or banking ops. If u can't take the heat, go get a gov job I guess.

Bro, suck it up. This will happen to everyone at certain point of their lives. No point begrudging Singapore work culture or it's unfair.

I have experienced this before and basically I can only suck thumb and keep telling myself to just do my job.

I don't think this is a Singaporean work culture kinda thing, I am sure this does happen in other parts of the world where you have people that will try to bring you down.
You just have to accept the fact that there will be people who will hate you no matter what you do.

If it's unbearable, tell HR. Unless you have other job opportunities, leave the company. Judging from your post (being humilated by your superior), I don't think you are at that level where your job experience is considered valuable or that of a higher rank to jump easily into another job.

Tks for your insight, but in your case, when you get humiliated by your superior in front of others, don't you feel your self-esteem getting lower day and day to the point where everyday in the company, you don't even dare to hold up your head high?

I'd be more worried about my appraisal and promotions more than my self-esteem. I consider myself as a person with fairly strong self esteem, and I wouldn't let things like these get to me. My sense of worth won't be influenced by a superior who may or may not know what he's doing.

I've been noticing your posts here in this forum and I think you aren't suitable for most corporate environment jobs based on what I can gauge about your personality. How do I know? Because I am somewhat similar to you, at least based on what I've seen from your posts.

You should consider something less cutthroat or competitive in nature...try government jobs (but also depends on which department) or maybe teaching (there's politics but generally lesser compared to corporate private coys).

As someone who has been devastated at a workplace. It is definitely not fun.

Fired from my first full time job after being humiliated for 2 weeks in the company.

Was pinpointed by my manager as he was unhappy I outshine him in a company competition. In our daily meetings, He made others shout at whatever I say. I try to reason, they straight shout and yell at me, looking at me fiercely. Like trying to make me resign. They went on for 2 weeks after which he sabotaged me to have a mistake in my work. He berated me then he brought the issue up to the senior manager, and later on a director was involved. The director did not give me a chance, was ruthless.

I think there were all friends of one another.

Wasn't given a chance to resign, straight fire.

Slipped into depression for 4 months, doctors recommend I see a psychiatrist. Felt hopeless. To make matters worst, my family berated me too.

If its a legit company, not those MLM bull, you can file a complaint with MOM. Especially since you have met a doctor. Meaning that you have proof of your depression. You can actually file a civil suit against that company.

Yes, now that I think about this, you may be just right.

Thinking back, the companies that I worked for in the past in which I can perform best all share 1 similar trait : the culture is very casual and/or family-oriented (ie: wife-and-husband company etc.). Either those, or the company has very few staff which results in minimal politics (less than 5 people).

The ones that I function the worst in all share a similar trait too : the corporate culture tends to be very strong and fast-paced, with a heavy emphasis on high performance.

Tks for helping me discover what kind of culture I fit best in, and will do my best to find companies which suits me better.

Tks again!
Nik
