Fresh Grad (Shipping Industry)
Dear all,
I am currently a fresh graduate waiting for convocation. I am offered a job in a shipping industry which owns vessel and majority of the company's biz come from chartering and brokering. I do not major in maritime studies so i have limited knowledge on shipping career.
I would be given the opportunity to rotate among the department (ops, technical) and I am wondering which department and role should i pursue (if i am given the choice to choose after my stint in all departments). HSE or other?
my package is around 2 month bonus with fixed 1 month aws. starting salary around 3.1k.
Any constructive opinion in terms of career and compensation would be highly appreciated

So u mean the job is not really related to your studies is it? If so then I think the package is average considering you are fresh grad too.
Which school did u graduate from?

just like many other industries you don't need to major in this particular field to pick it up.
just my opinion but ops/technical can get mundane.. as for HSE there is a strong demand for local HSE professionals but it can get quite tedious with all the procedures and manual updating (shipping is one of the most regulated industries in the world). commercial if you are good with people and enjoy drinking and socializing.
i would go for a business development role for maximum exposure and strategic-level thinking and work. i'm doing 40% commercial and 60% BD in the marine industry.
quite a good starting package, i would take it.
all the best.

Sounds like a good deal to me if you are a second lower degree grad. Bonus sounds good as well at 3 mths.
second upper/first class can get up to 3.6k , and those who go into civil service can even get 4k.

Thanks guys! it has been great to hear from you all.
I am a 2nd upper from NTU. Yes, my major isnt related to the job. hmmmm...I did consider civil or even police/ica due to the higher starting pay but i am looking in the long term.

that's what they tell u in the civil service, that you are pegged to the private sector. that's bullcrap.
let me tell u right now that barring sales, professional occupations and C-level positions, civil service jobs (up to department head levels) are higher paying than 80% of private sector jobs out there.
