Seems to me the typical job scope revolves around:
- surfing social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Internet forums for information relevant to clients (public perception of brands/companies, reactions from netizens for certain news or products - sentiment analysis)
- producing regular reports (daily, weekly, monthly) to summarize interesting news from business competitors, industry, sector or netizens' perception of client
- compiling certain statistics (number of new posts, positive, negative) and performing analysis to understand netizens' profiles, dynamics and behaviours to improve marketing communication
- presenting the statistics and findings to stakeholders to drive changes
My understanding may be inaccurate though.
Would anyone who has worked as a social media specialist/manager/analyst care to share the typical working conditions/lifestyle and challenges etc.? Thanks.

Depends on actual work. Job titles mean nothing. Most social media managers out there are basically simple marketing and promotion administrators that roll out advertising initiatives on social media.
Some global consumer MNCs have sophisticated centres of excellence dealing with social media interaction, but they are the minority.

Is there any future or long term career for such social media professionals?
Will this be a passing fad that dies off after 5-10 years?

You won't want to get into a dead end career, accumulate years of irrelevant experience, get retrenched and need to switch to other careers, do you? I fail to see why my concerns are not valid.

I suppose you don't do career planning?
If one keeps changing career track without continuity, switching industry and role, won't one be seen as a job hopper? Furthermore, one will have to restart at entry level pay scale.

career planning is an illusion by youngsters. ask the typical 50 yr old whether where they are now got anything to do with what they plan 20 yrs ago. 90% will laugh
