what i always found funny with shell is that if you are like civil service, wayang a lot, then why do you pretend to do work from 9 to 6. tied down to a computer and stare at the screen? sibei jia lat. you go for a bit longer, the old timer will aim you and make life "difficult" for you.

Just a friendly reminder to anyone who got lost here googling it etc. --> This forum is mostly about Singapore office talk. This boot-licking culture we are discussing here does NOT exist in the US or Europe. So if you are entering graduate program in The Hague for example, expect a more healthy environment

The Hague might be friendlier on the surface, but the politics there is simply insane because of the proximity to high powers. Sometimes its so subtle and undetectable you don't even realize what hit you until after it happens.
At least in Singapore it's direct naked political fights and wayang, I learned this the hard way when I went on a STIA to NL. The wayang and bootlick culture is exactly the same, but their way of executing it in HQ is truly a genteel performance.

Can share more about the gossipy nature and work environment?
When I went down for a meet and greet with the company, it looked like they were all very friendly and collegial.

Yea, on the surface. In fact they are friendly and positive to the extreme. Nobody wants to stick out even if they disagree or say anything that can be remotely construed as negative and all wayang friendliness with each other to get along.
I was from banking industry and honestly I find the politics there simpler than Shell. In the banks there will be some obnoxious @ssholes who are snobbish and purposely cause trouble. It is very obvious who are the trouble makers, taichi masters, schemers etc.
Over here, everyone volunteers to help you, give you suggestions etc. and then "accidentally" drops a banana peel on you and snigger quietly at you when you slip up and then come and express care and concern to you in their kindest demeanor.
My first 3 months here was also very pleasant as the people seem really nice on the surface. Took me a while to figure out that things are not what they seem. Once you manage to get into certain cliques and inner circles, that's when the gossiping and backstabbing will be revealed to you by your seniors.

How long were you in the company? Hard to believe, thought shell is a good place to be in.

My friend's sister who has been there for years also said the same thing.
She said the internal politics and infighting is also very bad although they appear very nice on the surface.
It is like 笑裡藏刀.

Hi everyone,
Read through and was very surprise Shell has such screwed up culture.
I am got an offer and despite stating my salary expectation as 15-20% higher, their recruiter came back and offered me a 6% paycut instead!!!
I told her it was not acceptable, but she said Shell give 3 months aws. But even if I take into account this, it is only 8% higher than my current pay. She also say performance bonus is about 2-2.5 months which is lower than what I am getting now (~3 months).
Total package wise it looks like they are only matching my current and didn't offer any increase at all. Benefits also very basic, no flex points or health programs, just standard medical insurance. She then try to give me a lot of sales talk about branding, culture, learning, future opportunities, travel around the world meeting new people etc.
I told her to give me a few days to consider and go online to research and end up at this thread. Before here I am already 50:50, now read so much politics and backstabbing and some more no pay increase like not worth the risk at all.
Anyone who join Shell at mid career can comment?
Thanks.

How many yrs of experience you have? Shell pays competitively. The pay is benchmarked against job group.
Culture wise not that bad like people say here
