I recently left my previous employment of near 6 years earlier this January out of desperation. There were some internal problems within the company which literally drove me out of the company. So anyway i thought finding a job shouldn't be a problem. Thinking i would probably be employed within a month or two but lo and behold it took till October for me to finally get a job.

It was tough. A gruelling 10 months of no income. My wife had to support me and I had to sell whatever favourite item i could find off on carousell so i could pay my bills. Earlier I also held back on looking for a part-time as I thought it wouldn't make much sense while I have years of working experience and at least a diploma to earn me a full time position somewhere. I was wrong. Resumes after resumes were sent to no avail on jobstreet and even other career pages as well as direct to companies. There were zero calls for an interview from anywhere.

In August, my luck took a slightly better turn. I finally decided to look for a part-time job and was lucky enough to find one of interest that I quickly signed up for. Later in the week, a couple of friends hooked me up with a recruiter from an auditing company and she was able to advise me how to beef up my resumes to better increase my prospect of getting hired. She also laced me up with an interview with the company for an available position. Out of desperation, I also paid like $50 to be part of a 'priority' list of jobseekers on jobstreet to increase my chances of getting hired. It didn't help poop.

Sometime in September i saw a position of interest with Republic Polytechnic. It was something i believed i could excel in and sincerely hoped i could get to. Lucky enough for me, they called a week after. I attended the interview wholeheartedly and expressed an intent desire to work with them. I placed all my bets on that job. I made it to the final interview and could only hope for the best. Earlier this week, i got a call from them with a job offer.

I hope you guys don't give up and keep searching.

Good for you! Are you around 40+? You are not only fighting with locals but also lots and lots of FTs willing to work for a lot less!

Just wonder how did you pass time during this 10 months long period without work?

Thanks for sharing.

Let this be a good lesson for all the other people out there thinking of quitting without a job. Never do that no matter how bad the situation is unless you are financially independent.

A prolong period of unemployment can easily wipe out all your savings and force you to fire sale whatever remaining possessions you have.

If young in 20s still can recover, for mid-careers in their late 30s and above to start your net worth from zero at this age is more or less guaranteed you are screwed and need to work till 65-70 before you can retire.

Thanks Orion9.

I was retrenched from my short 6 months job 8 months ago. Reading your story, I feel much better. I feel like employers when looking at my short 6 months work, they think I'm not suitable and a jobhopper.

Already submitted lots of jobs that I really want, hopefully I get in as soon as possible. I'm really feeling the pinch now and also very bored.

I wish everyone looking for a job will get one soon!

I have been to a company on top of peninsula plaza for interview several months ago. It was an unforgettable experience because it was my first interview and it was so bad! The interviewer was so arrogant and he looked down on me because I'm a fresh graduate and showed zero respect for me during the interview. If you do not wish to hire fresh graduates, then do not state that you welcome fresh grads to apply! It was so shocked at that moment that someone at such respectable position will actually speak like this and disrespect the interviewee.

Thinking back of this experience still makes my blood boils!
WOW i had the same experience at a very reputable company in Singapore. The manager was very rude and disrespectful. She looked and talked to me in disgust. I was so excited to be part of the company but the interview turned out so bitter. She asked me why did I even attend the interview...HELLO?? THE COMPANY SHORTLISTED ME. till today I feel angered by the experience. it really made me less confident in other job interviews.
