There is no such thing as 'automatic' promotion. Someone (aka your HOD) has to press the button.
From your grades, two promotions in five years - one of them should be 'within grade' promotion (no change in your MX grade or even if there is a change, it has an 'A' attached, with the exception of MX11, which has MX11A).

PB is for confirmed officer. Depending on the statutory boards, it can be either six months or one year probation period.

Hmm I got a confirmation (after working one year) in ministry in 2014, but was given B for PB.
Then this year I had an overall promotion across the board (i.e. Everyone who joined the same time as me were all promoted) , but got a C+ for PB. A drop in grade, but colleagues are telling me it's normal :/

What is more important is the quantum for each grade. Usually grade will drop together with quantum but when it is translate to actual cash, you should get more or less the same when comparing your promotion year with post promotion year. You can work your way up thereafter.
By the alway, whoever gives those grades are pretty generous.

Well, this is what management told me. If you get two B conservatively, the third year will be a promotion. I am not about to argue with management about that. Just take the promotion and say thank you.

On the years of my promotions, I got C+. I was told by management I would have been given a B if not for the promotions. I heard of the default grade but it is not totally true. For example, in theory, your first year is a default C, but I got a B on my first year.
1st year B
2nd year C+(Promoted)
3rd year B
4th year B
5th year C+(Promoted)
How I did this?
The truth is I put in very long hours. Sat and Sundays included. My HOD is a workaholic and he sees me in the office during the weekends. I put in more hours than my HOD. Not advisable for people looking for work-life balance. I am the first one to say I sacrifice my life for fast promotions.
