Default Advices needed for courses to take

Hi all, I am 30 this year and currently working in the aerospace sector for many years. I have a Diploma in Electronics, Computer and Communications and wishes to start a business. However I lacked the knowledge in setting up a business, managing it and expanding it.

That's why I feel I may have to get some education on this area and is looking at pursuing a degree in this field. I hope to get some advices from the people in the forum as to what kind of courses I should take and from which education provider.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Kelvin, You do not just wish to start a business. The fact that you don't know what business to start means you should not leave your current job. Stay in the sector, and perhaps look for opportunities within the sector since you are most familiar with that. Also, you might try to work at different departments, or try moving into sales and marketing where you will improve your social acumen and also increase your contacts.

Only branch out on your own after you have identified the opportunities.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. Businessman.

Poster: Mr. Businessman. Made the best advice EVER!

You dun start a business because you got the skills to start a business... stay in the industry and spot opportunities ie: missing services/products discuss the lack of such programs with experienced workers before you take the risk.

If you really want to start a business, move into sales/marketing, after all business is all about sales; selling stuff... Marketing depending on job scope may not be that important for small start ups.

If you really want, but cant step into the sales force, try moving to sales support, over there you can learn how to follow up on customer's inquiries, issue invoices, payment/import/deliverable terms etc etc

Meanwhile try to network people for future collaboration, like what kind of business you plan to setup? Internet? F&B? Retail? Trade? etc etc

Or actually just stay on a LAE, the pay is not bad

You can also check out Lithan Hall's Diploma in Technopreneurship program. It involves 12 months of full-time work experience at a startup with entrepreneurship courses, to develop you into a successful sales and marketing/product management professional and of course the essential skills for eventually building your own business.

Wanted: Entrepreneurial Talents

adding on to what mr. businessman said. You should consider attending some business networking groups.

The purpose is to expand your contacts and know people working in different industries. such as lawyers, middlemen, printers, IT, florist, bakers, insurance agents, property agents, accountants, grant consultants, advertisers, SEM specialist, website developers etc.

Since you are in the aerospace industry, I am sure you know this industry better than anyone else. during your work, you may have spotted some loopholes too.

You may want to consider starting a business to provide products or services to cater to these loopholes you have identified.

Just Remember:
There are many reasons to start a business. It can be your habit. It can be just for the sake of starting one. It can be to serve the community better.

Find a purpose to start a business and let that purpose become the "Mission Statement" of your business.

You don't need a degree to start a business. You only need a degree to work for other people's business.

Honestly kelvin, you are not cut out for business at the moment. You do not have the entrepreneur mind yet. If you do you would have instinctively find out what business is on your own instead of asking strangers on what course you should take. An entrepreneur mind is not something schools can teach. It's something that people argue is innate, or to some extent, can be trained by reading widely and being observant. You see what service/good is lacking, and you innovate or improve the things that will make society better.

I am an entrepreneur, started my first business when i was 17. Now 28, I don't earn big bucks, but i do know how tough is it to start a business in a ultra-globalised Singapore. It's even tougher now with the prevalence of internet and social media, together with the monopolisation of corporations like NTUC and Shengsiong.
