Is that really all that bad? At least you get a 6 month job hunting buffer time and a brand name firm on your CV. You can also spin some rubbish about how you want to change to a new practice area yada yada in interviews.
Law firms are notoriously prestige driven.
Once you start out in a brand name firm, your career trajectory is generally better even if you did next to nothing but punch holes and do other glorified secretarial tasks. On the other hand, even if you started out doing really substantive work in a small firm, very few big firms are going to give you a second look.
